Why Was Bulimia Nervosa Rare In Women Born Before The 1950′s

Posted in Eating Disorders | Asked on Oct 7, 2011

“Anorexia nervosa has a long history but bulimia nervosa was rare in women born before the 1950′s” i got that quote from the gale databases but it doesn’t say why. Like why did it change, why isn’t it rare anymore. Did something happen to increase bulimia nervosa?
Like what in the media influenced people to develop bulimia nervosa?

Ok, this is kind of hard to articulate but I think the reason that anorexia was always prevalent but bulimia is recent is because women have always wanted to be thin, but back then, food was not so addictive. There was no Mickey D’s on every corner and people’s morning coffee was not loaded with flavored sugars. You ate wholesome, natural foods. Women with an eating disorder just didn’t eat because food was just not as attractive.

Now that we are bombarded every day with advertising for cheeseburgers, pizza, chocolate, etc, it’s hard to stay away. So they eat them. But they can’t let themselves get fat so they’d purge.

So I agree with the other answers that it has a lot to do with media, but I don’t think it’s the fault of the actresses, models, etc. Maybe we can blame them for eating disorders in general, but not specifically bulimia because there have always been pretty, thin, famous women. I think it’s more our food culture and how food gets presented to us these days.

    Hope that made sense! :)
